In response to the theme of ‘Force’, I decided on four rules to follow:
Only 3 seconds to draw every line
The subject needs to be able to fit in a pocket
Have a 3 colour limit
Have to use the symmetry tool
With these rules, I decided to use Clip Studio Paint and focus on creatures peeping out of a pocket. By following the rules, I had to use techniques I wouldn’t normally use and focused more on the overall shape of the art rather than the lines and details. For example, the 3 seconds limit made me use the auto-select tool more. I had already created an action sequence for this tool as well in Clip Studio Paint which would enlarge the selected area by 3 pixels and fill it in. I hadn’t been using it as much before because often I would focus more on details and linework but because I was limited to 3 seconds for each stroke, this auto-fill tool became useful in speeding up my iterating process. Because of the restrictions, I was able to quickly iterate and refine tools and techniques I did not regularly use. Similar work has been produced by DrawingWiffWaffles who attempted a character design challenge using only 3 marker colours. She explores the theme by developing inspiration first from the colour palette before moving on to designing the character. Even once she has an almost complete design done, she goes back and tries to iterate more based on the complete render she does, swapping the colours around and exaggerating aspects of the character.
