Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Responding to the topic of Observation in this week's class, I opted to focus on my observations of the city of Melbourne around me and the anxieties of moving here from a much smaller place. In particular, the seemingly massive scale of the skyline and its endlessness compared to that of Perth, my home city. While studying the skyline from a bridge in South Yarra I noticed the way in which the Yarra seemed to flow from me to the city, and how the towering building seemed to meet the overcast sky. I attempted to depict this fluid relationship, depicting a shift from one to the other to reflect the everchanging nature of both the river waters and the constant construction of the skyline itself.

I took reference photos with my phone and some voice memos of city ambience, and assembled the animation in Adobe Animate. I had intended to incorporate the city sounds, but being a short exercise I thought it better to focus on the animation itself and upload it on its own. Considering its short duration, incorporating sound also seemed uneccesary.

Similar imagery has been depicted by Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa in Death Stranding, which depicts a universe on the edge of collapse, colliding with an alternative dimension and producing strand-like tethers to the sky and tendrilled monsters.
