Description:
In response to the week’s theme of observation, first, I start to draw random pictures by using watercolor, after 10 minutes, turns out the color palette looks way more interesting than the drawing. It looks just like traditional Chinese ink painting, so I capture it and trying to ‘tinker’ with it in Photoshop.
By doing a series of cutting and rotating, a very traditional ink-looking figure turned into a very modernism figure. By cut the figure into pieces, I rotate those pieces upside down or just flip to see what will it look like. In the beginning, I was exactly following the cutting lines, but then I just rotated them randomly and that makes it looks more interesting in my opinion.
Similar work has been produced by Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, whose work ‘Composition with Red Blue and Yellow’ kind of explored what are the definitions and elements of modernism. Also, Shitao’s works (Chinese ink painting) shown that how ink painting described the landscape in black and white. They showed the modern way and traditional way of thinking separately.
