Theme:

Objects Are Not Exhausted

Context:

Anthropocentrism is the privileging of humans as "subjects" over and against nonhuman beings as "objects". But objects exist independently of human perception, and nonhuman object relations distort their related objects in the same fundamental manner as human consciousness. Thus, all object relations, human and nonhuman, are said to exist on equal ontological footing with one another.

Graham Harman, Guerilla Metaphysics: Phenomenology and the Carpentry of things, Chicago and La Salle, Illinois, Open Court, 2005 .

Most OOO theorists do not suffer the time-limited significance of chance, preferring the concept of contingency, where anything can change at any time for no reason: ‘Contingency expresses the fact that physical laws remain indifferent as to whether an event occurs or not__ they allow an entity to emerge, to subsist, or to Parish. Our future does not rely on the aleatory roll of the dice. We are the dice and the roller and accident.

I also did a map of all the points that I understood from OOO that is uploaded.

Method:

I used Google Maps to find random objects in different parts of the world and then took a screenshot of the object and played with it in Photoshop.

Response:

Mostly reading about OOO really inspired me to make a collection of the photographs, I wanted to remove myself from the object for this activity to an extent that I decided to use Google Maps. Also, after reading a PhD paper on OOO I thought about contingency and its relation to my work the photos were taken back in 2014 by Google which means that the objects might not exist in that location anymore.

Some works that helped me understand the idea

1. Walter De Maria, The New York Earth Room, 197 cubic meters of earth,1977, Dia Art Foundation, 141 Wooster Street, New York City.

In his work there is:

-     An interest in lived, perceived, experienced space.

-     An interest in the materiality of earth.

-      An interest in the things often overlooked in the everyday.

“I think that it is more interesting to talk about art in terms of the material that determines the work, rather than the artist’s identity...”
