Found Objects
Context:
- We rely a lot on context to interpret visual data; we fill in perceptual gaps and can falsely classify objects (seeing a small piece of dark fluff and thinking it's a spider), which is taken advantage of in optical illusions eg. illusory contours like seeing Kanizsa's triangle (even though there are no triangles in the picture) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_contours
- It might take us several seconds of investigation to process contradictory evidence and realise something is out of place, as in "Fresh Guacamole" by PES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNJdJIwCF_
Method:
I will photograph the drum stick in different environments and contexts where it may be mistaken for a different object.
Response:
I took a multitude of pictures of the drumstick placed in different environments: in a box of paintbrushes, a table in a shed, in a kitchen pot, held next to a cello, and placed in a tree. I then edited the photos to touch up the lighting and colours, and also tweaked the saturation to produce black and white images.
