THEME
Tinkering
METHOD
Using a ballpoint pen I’ll scribble a random shape and create a quick sketch from it, staying within the bounds of the original shape. After doing a few of these I’ll pick a concept to develop and refine further; I will not erase or alter the original lines once they’re down beyond going over existing linework in another colour.
CONTEXT
I tend to be too precious with my work, spending too much time erasing and starting over in my work. Because of this I’ve avoided ever participating in inktober, though I do enjoy seeing the work other artists I follow post for it. Linework is not a strong point for me, and while I’m not necessarily using this exercise to change that I do want to become more comfortable with committing to lines as I draw them.

RESPONSE
I ended up with a couple of pages worth of sketches, none of which I’m particularly attached to. As warmups they’re acceptable but I didn’t find myself wanting to develop any of the ideas further past this exercise. While the end result might not have been overly inspiring the blob > design method was fun and kept me engaged; if I’d kept iterating a while longer I think I would have found something workable.
