Theme: Object-Oriented Ontology

Method: Exploration. Observation. Photographic Record.

Context: Eduardo Navarro’s Timeless Alex 2015, Pierre Huyghe's Zoodrama 2010.

Response:

This exercise started with lots of confusion. During my first years studying the Visual Arts bachelor’s degree back in Colombia, I was very reluctant regarding everything that wasn’t Teckné and its appreciation, in other words, I hated deeply modern and post-modern art. However, when I left home a month ago, I promised myself I was going to leave all the bad vibes, thoughts and feelings back, and I will be open minded to everything, give it a try to have a rational idea of the actual topic.

I started to look for different texts on the internet where object-oriented ontology was “explained” to understand better the concept but every time I was getting more tangled. Then, I found 2 artists and their projects and how they approached to object-oriented ontology. Both based their projects on the premises of the dehumanization in post-humanization. Navarro’s work was a performance where he wanted to understand how would be being the last turtle of an endangered species on earth (and ended up feeling like how a turtle would try to act as a human). Huyghe’s work was a bit more interesting for me, he’s project was a fish tank filled with hermit crabs and human garbage such as bottles, plastic containers, etc, the piece showed how the crabs used the garbage as their shells and how nature will continue developing and adapting after humans let’s say… or at least that’s how I got it.

I’ve always been really interested in human extinction/eradication themes, movies, comics, etc, so I wanted to explore the city and try to find out signs where nature is getting back its territory, and for my pleasure I did. They were not like the big deal but the photographic records that I got were really encouraging. If plants or trees, which are “passive living beings”, are slowly constantly trying to take their world back growing on the most uncomfortable places or covering the human ruins, it’s not odd to think that in just a few years without us-parasites this planet will be as it is supposed to be again.
