Rules of engagement

1) Work with items found in nature.

2) Must wear a denim jacket.

3) Put it in a bottle.

and of course, has to relate to your studio practice.

Method

I used the same parallax technique to animate a photo as my studio work. I compiled objects in photoshop and created a narrative based upon the rules.

Context

I went from animals wearing denim jackets to buildings shaped like a bottle to how to catch
a fish with bottle to self-filling water bottle myth busted to bottle art to people filling water
bottle in the wild to people drinking from a bottle. So yea, it wasn't simple.

So then I decided to understand how to funtion with constraints and rules instead of focusing on what to make.

That lead to something...

There is an interesting concept in my country which is considerably used to deal with most things. It's not necessarily the best way to deal with the issue but it surprisingly works. The idea is called "Jugaad", it essentially means finding a makeshift way to make something function. Which I felt would be a approach perfect for this exercise.

I also was trying to figure out how to make something found in nature wear a denim jacket, which lead to animals dressing up. Putting in bottle to me straight away felt like a metaphor, which gave me a hint towards the serious issue of plasting dumping in oceans.

Pacific plastic dump far larger than feared: study

For Ocean Animals, ‘Death By Plastic’ Could Be Occurring More Frequently

Response

I created a parallax video about sea creatures moving around in the sea where plastic has been dumped. The dolphin (object found in nature) is wearing a denim jacket (make it wear a denim jacket) as a reference to the sea creatures having garbage stuck on them. The camera then zooms out showing a bottle floating around in the sea close to the camera, it gives the appearance of the fishes being trapped inside the bottle (put it in a bottle). I made this piece in reference to the force being our polluting actions towards the ocean that leads to sea creatures living such a life. The force here as an exercise was also working under random contrains and thinking creatively. I enjoyed this exersice but it became too serious for my taste so I added a completely unnecessary "bitch" in the end to lighten my own mood.
