Context
“The power of abstract animation is to capture the moment between breaths, to create direct emotional expressions without words or texts.” (Paul Fletcher)
Abstract animation means incomprehensible graphics and meanings to me. And abstract animation is also the type of animation I have never experienced. After studying what Paul summed up, the first thing that came to my mind was SCENTation SYNESTHESIA, a 2d animation by moon. (http://magistudio.net/work/studio-2-scentation-synesthesia) She designed and Morphing, capturing every moment of the human breath, creates emotional expression without words. Exploring the interconnection between human beings breathing, thought, and energy. The 2D animation she created is full of mysterious attraction, and every frame of change is full of magic! This gave me an initial inspiration.
Then I watched Yara's 2d animation 'Abstract Animation' when I searched for related animations on Youtube. (https://youtu.be/d24xrC_XQgQ) She uses smooth graphic changes to match the background music, so that the deformation and music are related to each other. Created an interesting abstract visual effect.
Method
Since this was my first attempt at abstract type animation, I spent a lot of time referencing other people's work. And I find that they are more concerned with visual changes, and become less clear about the story and meaning. (Maybe this is also the meaning of abstraction?)
So this week I wanted to create an abstract 2d animation that focused on the story that the images told.
The background music of Yara's work gave me a lot of inspiration, and similar music I thought of the beginning of the animation TOM AND JERRY. The reason I chose this is also for the audience to quickly understand my work, so as to understand the story and graphics expressed in graphics. mean.
I tried to draw a more detailed graphic of the lion's mouth, but I found it to be very unabstract. So I started to specify a rule for myself: everything can only use regular graphics.
Response
I created an abstract animation called "snap". I tried to express an abstract animation with a more obvious story through regular graphics.
Reflection
To start my research on abstract animation this week, I read Yee's recommended article 'Content and Meaning in Abstract Animation' by Pamela Turner.
In this book I understand that abstract animation, although it has no narrative to build, still has its meaning (focusing the viewer's attention on sight and sound). And my first thought was to make an abstract 2D animation, through a few sets of regular graphics to complete a simple action. Such as catch, chase and lure. In order to allow the audience to quickly understand the meaning of the movement of the graphics, I used the traditional music of Tom and Jerry to allow the audience to quickly imagine the movements behind the graphics.
This attempt at abstract animation is very meaningful, it taught me about the different charms of 2D animation in different ways. It is also understood that the deformation between lines and figures expresses an unprecedented feeling in different ways.
