Theme:
Play and Abstract
Context:
During the lecture we shared the understanding of abstract. I depicted it as the interpretation of personal feeling. And after I have read the references provided by Matt, I have a better understanding of abstract animation in terms of it's form, structure and grammar. I've realised the fascinatingness of abstract animation, and the potential of creating abstract animation. It is a lyrical and poetic
interpretation from animators. The non-narrative approach liberates the possibilities of abstract animation. Thus, I started heading to my project. I asked myself, what is the most compelling feeling of my personal life recently. The word spring comes to my mind. It's getting warm recently, I started walking everyday and I've found it helps me a lot in reducing stress. The mysterious power of spring nourishes the landscape, everything in my life has become delightful. While the chili trees and mint I grow change everyday. I couldn't imagine that if people could grow this fast, everyone would be a giant. I am so excited about depicting the spring concept with abstract animation. Then, I thought about the elements in spring and tried to make them into a more iconic way. And using the movement of shapes to interpret the amazing growing speed in the spring.
Method:
Once the spring concept emerged, I wrote down the elements of spring that I want to demonstrate--wind, growing, rain, sun, flower. While turning these elements into a more personal-understanding way. I want my animation to have a more dynamic and jitter look, thus, I choose straight ahead ,frame by frame drawing method to create my animation. After I finished the drawing I composed it with delightful music.
Response/Reflection:
The concept of Play and abstract has become my favourite theme of APD. It's dynamic and liberated form has many potential in animation. I feel there is a gate opened for me and through the gate I can approach to anywhere, I can control the vibration I can define and interpret everything to anything. It feels amazing. And this concept also gives me the understating of appreciating other people's abstract work, the connection between viewer and arts also become personal, I can understand and interpret the work freely. How liberal is that? I think it's the core of abstract and the core of art.
