Play and Audiences

Context

“I think comedy as an art involves the audience as a participant as much as is involves the artist.” - Craig Ferguson

During the lecture Matt showed us some amazing works there was two projects catch my attention. One of the work is ‘Body of Play’(http://hellothisismywebsite.com/body-of-play), a person lay in the coven and audiences are able to interact with the body in the coven and the graphs will show on the projector. The creepiness got my attention,  and the second work Max shows us ‘Hot Swap’(https://vimeo.com/303835908). A two-player cooperative arcade survival game were players must swap out and trade inputs on their controllers survive the onslaught of approaching enemy ships. 

There was a moment that I am not quite sure what I supposed to do for this week, while everyone was searching up what to make. Some of us start to watch Japanese Tv show ‘Ningen Kansatsu Variety Monitoring’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lraQITnaMT8) that the company will set up strange situations for random people to experience and monitor how they react to them. Qiannyu come up with ideas that we should physically play with the audience, then myself, Qiannyu and Stark we decided to corporate. 

‘The Truman Show’ 1998 That he doesn't know it, but everything in Truman Burbank's (Jim Carrey) life is part of a massive TV set. Our ideas for the exercise was not letting out audience to know what we have a plan for them. 

Method

We are going to edit some movies clips and combine into 3 different movies. Every audience will show two different movies and keep it as a secret from others. 

The 3 different movies 

  • Kiss/Hold hand 
  • Food(noodles)/Drink
  • Hit/ Rain

While we are presenting the movie we will interact with the audience as what the movie shows. 

Response

During our edit process, we have made a lot of changes, and we almost spend one day to edit all the clips.

The 3 different movies 

Movie 1 Rain + Fighting / Dancing

Movie 2 Boat + Shaking / Water + Bubbles 

Movie 3 Wind + Shaking / Electric toothbrush / Creepy hands 

Those were the movies that we edit for the audiences, the first few audiences really like our work specially the Movie 1. A lot of people didn’t aspected what was going to happen. The first few days we don’t have enough equipment for Movie 3, the first few days we just have to show people Movie 1 and 2. 

Reflection

Play and audience, in our exercise we interact with the audiences to made them feel they involved within the act. Every audience gave us different responses also allows other viewer feels participated in our work. This work didn’t really relate toward my studio project, but given others joyfully. Play can be a challenge and reward also enjoy, this is the kind of work that made others engage and joyful.
