Play and Place- Week4

Theme

In response to the theme of " Play and Place ", I drew an illustration of my Studio2 character floating in space. Later adapted it into a 3D environment, and made it into an animation. After converting the 2D image to 3D, through the lens movement, and layers of objects, including lines and some planets, can make the audience perceive the sense of perspective, and then achieve the effect of being in the real world.Method

I made the 3D animation based on my Studio 2 character- A dog shape alien astronaut named Billy. I first draw the picture in Procreate in many layers. I first drew a number of layers in Procreate to make it easier to set up a layer-by-layer feel inside the 3D software. This technique is usually used in the 3D environment of After Effects to make the 2D material look like it has a sense of perspective. But in addition to that I have blended 3D models, not just exporting layers for illustrations. The shader setting is another task, because some images are both translucent and transparent, so pay attention to how to preserve the details. If you need to enter the compositing software editing afterwards, you must also think about the settings of the 3D render layer first.

Context

In Week4, we learned about how the place offers many new opportunities for where, when and how people play, so that the audience can be more engaged in the physical environment. The physical set-up of a peep show instils certain expectations in advance. Moving forward to peep through a restricted viewpoint, the viewer anticipates that they will see something titillating(Smith, 2022). By having a  limited viewpoint and keep push closer, the viewer will be excited about the upcoming view, even if there are no new objects coming into sight.

On the other hand, Vivian Sobchack argues that static metaphors dominate film theory- for example, the experience of watching a film, is compared to the picture frame, the window and the mirror-and that these metaphors present the viewing experience as stationary and passive( Sobchack 1992,14). Therefore, having a dynamic display can offset the negative effects of borders on any screen.

I ran into some problems while doing it. The first is that the layers are very messy at the beginning of the procreate painting, and it takes a lot of effort to separate some parts that are mixed together. Then there is the 3D material setting, it is a bit difficult to take into account the transparent and translucent parts, and sometimes there are black lines on the edges. In the end, I solved the problem by constantly adjusting the parameters and watching online tutorials.

Reflection

Although the subject 'object' is usually associated with real objects, I hope it can be more suitable for my studio project, so I still want to try to make virtual works. The Explosion effect is very helpful for my animations, because there are a lot of obstacles and dramatic effects like a flying ship travelling through space, all of which are accompanied by explosions. Future research on explosion and particle effects will focus more on the influence of different parameters on objects, so as to bring out more detailed animations in practical applications
