  • Theme
In response to the theme of Play and Place, I decided to make a similar animation for Week 1. When I see place, the first thing that comes to my mind is the beautiful place I went to during my studies in Australia, and to this day, I still often reminisce about my life there. There's a Lilliput in one place in Ballarat, so my idea was born. I took him through the places I had seen, connecting play and place through skateboarding.

  • Context
When I watched Doraemon, I remembered that there was a tool in it that could turn people into villains. When children were young, they often fantasized about how good it would be if they were a villain, then they could enter the bought toys and live in various beautiful toy castles. So when I saw these miniature buildings in Ballarat, I had a lot of admiration for the people who built it all.It gave me a lot of fantasies. If there are really villains here, how will everyone passing by interact? How will these little people go about their lives? So I took these questions and wanted to play the villain in my travel videos by drawing animated characters.
My inspiration came from Hayao Miyazaki's work: The Borrower Arrietty. In this work, I deeply realized the relationship between place and character. In particular, he depicts a lot of exquisite and perfect places by standing in the perspective of the villain. So the protagonist in my video is a villain, because when people think of villains, they can easily think of the world they see, the place they see.
In order to connect my work to play, I watched the youtube link that Matt shared with me in class. The video Aug(De)Mented Reality, produced by Hombre_McSteez, fully makes 2d characters interact with reality. So in my work, I also hope that I can interact with the real world through 2d characters to complete a 2d and realistic work.

  • Method
It's not easy to convey my fantasies about them, I tell the audience through the dialogue that the characters have with me that we're going to play by skateboarding. And through the lens and the relationship between the characters in the screen, to balance the audience's attention.
place is a very important part for animation. In my animation, its style should be fun and happy, but parts of the landscape will be darker, plus it's beautiful. So I chose an appropriate music to balance the relationship between the two, so that the audience can get the joy of the characters and also feel these beautiful places.

  • Reflection

At the beginning I lost my inspiration. I spent a lot of time imagining what place could bring me. But in the end I still can't figure out what I want to do.
What I imagined is recording the scenery inside the game. Connect relationships by drawing 2d characters. After discussing with yunjia and xincheng, I found that this would lose focus on place. Based on this, I started to rummage through the videos on my mobile phone, and at this time I saw the building of that Lilliputian. At this time, I was reminded of the anime The Borrower Arrietty, thinking of every beautiful house where the villains lived, and their special visual effects for each place. So I drew 2d characters and added the skateboard action to make the story more interesting. I was going to make an animation of a few seconds, but found that it doesn't express my thoughts on the environment at all. So I expanded it to 1 and a half minutes.

In the process I discovered a difficult problem. When the video starts to shake, it is always difficult for the character to follow the shaking, which makes the picture feel that the character does not merge with the place. Animations like this are new to me, and while it doesn't take time to draw backgrounds, it requires more research into the character's movements.
