Theme: Play and Object

Context:

In this week, I observed every common objects around me, and I was inspired by the book for those who cannot make a decision called ‘The book of answers’. I wanted to combine it with electronic devices and explore the interactive potential of the book.

Also, the theory of embedded systems mentioned in  book The Materiality of Interaction : Notes on the Materials of Interaction Design inspired me. What if I embeded 'the book of answers' into a electronic device?

Method:

Coding in quick commands.

Response:

When I tried to analyze the book from a coding point of view, I found the principle of it to be simple: random ambiguous answers. My first thought was to make a simple iPad app that randomly selects one from answers bank. However, after learning about the development process of an application, I found that it is complex and impossible to make an application in a week.

I changed my mind and planned to make a little game in unity to achieve my goal. As it progresses, I found that to run smoothly on iPad, my program needed to be transcoded with XCode. while I was learning XCode, I accidently learn about another great way to achieve it: IOS quick commands. By using quick commands, the devise can display an image randomly. I created a number of images of answers in GoodNotes, and put them in an album.

Also, since the way I open my iPad is very much like how a book is opened, I decorated it to look like a book and edited the quick commands.

Reflection:

I think the reason for the popularity of this book is that it gives readers confidence. When questions are asked, readers already have the answers in their mind, but an external response is needed to firm up the answer. Based on this reflection, I reckon my project can be more ritualistic, such as embedding the iPad in an old book, adding magic-style transition animations.
