Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

Context
In response to the theme of Play+Sound, I created a silent game of light and shadow to help the children focus their attention better. It was similar to Week 5 but different in that the shadows were their most familiar and yet unfamiliar ‘best friend’. I used a torch and a white cloth to stage a Chaplin silent film.

Method
The first step was to hang a light-transmitting white cloth in a relatively empty and dark room, so that the torch could shine a shadow onto the cloth. This completes the set up. Through their movements, the shadows form a character, and I complete her silent film with post-production editing and dubbing.

In Chaplin’s production of The Circus, he burrows like a headless fly into the circus being performed, on stage, and his various physical movements, dodging the police, are treated by the audience as a circus act. The soundtrack echoes his movements perfectly.

Reflection
Through this week’s practice, I have learnt many specific ways of using the Sound, such as silent films, where the music is used to evoke emotion and the body movements become an emotional aid. During the games, the process is their enjoyment of the game and the outcome is theirs alone. This also motivates them to discover and enjoy the pleasures of life better.I learnt a lot about the ways of PLAY through the first week of practice. I want to interact through light and shadow in the next weekly exercises. I think it will be a particularly interesting exercise.
