Play and Materialism
Context:
Perspective of Ink Animation from the Perspective of Non-semantic Communication by Ya Jie Lin, Yangg Huang and Xiao Cheng Zhou.
"Performance of a carefully arranged environment, to play a show to convey the aesthetic feeling of different concentration." It focuses on the outer world of the painting through elements.
Method:
We will use Acrylic Ink of different colors (blue, pink, red, yellow and green). We will use a big bowl to fill water and drop the ink and see the satisfying results and capture it on camera to make something interesting. We will buy the ink products from an art and craft store and borrow the DSLR camera and tripod from building 9 technical room. Tripod is important because we can easily capture the results of the ink dissolving in water. If we capture it manually, it will be very shaky and the quality might not be so good.
We did some few tests. We did it outdoors, because the quality wasn't so good indoors and there were so many shadows. We also needed a white wall as a background so that we can see the colors easily. If we don't use it, the background of the city will be too disturbing. Since there was no white background in the terrace where we were doing the experiment, we found a white small chair and placed it as a background. After this, we started creating some interesting results while capturing it on the camera at the same time.
Response:
I am happy with the result because we had so much fun and it was very satisfying to see what it looked like at the end. The only difficult part was when we did a mistake such as the ink didn't come out properly out of the tweezer. Taniya dropped in a color and when i dropped in another color, that color didn't come out. The result didn't look that good because we were trying to achieve a look where two colors get dropped at the same time and mix around. For each test, we had to keep emptying the tray and filling it with clear water. It was time consuming and it was heavy. I learnt a lot about this experiment because using DSLR and tripod was the first time and we spent time looking at tutorials on how to use it.
Reflection:
This is related to play as we did a test of not knowing what the result will be but experimenting and wondering how the result might look like. We couldn't look at the video as we were doing it since the tripod was set few distance away just so we can see the tray. We played with different colors, concentration and positions. As we were doing it, from the top view it looked like the liquid is just falling but as we looked at the video capturing the front view, it looked really satisfying. The movement of the ink and how they dissolve in water and blend with other colors were just amazing.
