Play and Abstraction
Method
This week, I used the software Procreate and a timer to create.
I paint with random paused numbers and try to fill in the small gaps in the canvas.
Context
This week, I'm mainly thinking about how to use the element of randomness to create abstract artwork. Randomness always brings some surprises, and of course there are failures. After thinking about animals, plants, humans, symbols, numbers and letter elements, I finally decided to use numbers and timers to make some random creations.
I was inspired by the artwork of Paul Klee (1879-1940) shown in class, and Birdcalls (Malcolm Satherland, 2005).
So I finally decided to use these methods to create:
Reflection
In this creation, I did not think about what kind of masterpiece to draw, but focused on where to fill the canvas with numbers. "For an 'abstract' painting is really a most positively concrete painting since it confines the attention to its immediate, sensuous, physical surface far more than does the canvas of a sunset or a portrait." (Barr 1936) Therefore, this is a Very emotional painting process. I used to focus almost all the time on how to make the picture look good. I haven't thought about the process of painting and it can be very accidental. At the same time, my work has some connections to Joan Miró's masterpieces: symbolic elements. Abstraction is a complex and incomprehensible art, and it is precisely the reason for abstraction that provides people with a way to create boldly.
