Theme

Play and Abstraction

Response

For this week theme, I created an interactive website where the player would be able to destroy the image/photo. The project was based on the reality of covid and of that of social distancing. The background was that the the melting of the painting act as a metaphor that people are longing for social interaction after being apart from so long.

The final product is available here : https://editor.p5js.org/Yee_Jing/full/DYdakRhp_

Contex

My main inspiration for this project is Yayoi Kusuma. She has produced a body of work formally unified by its use of repetitive dots, pumpkins, and mirrors. “Pursuing the philosophy of the universe through art under such circumstances has led me to what I call stereotypical repetition.” When I look at abstract art, there is a certain repetition element to it.

My other inspiration was Alper Dostal, where he was a multidisciplinary artist. One of his exhibition, Hot exhibition, takes older artwork and reimagined them as a melting artwork. He specializes in creating visual concepts that move between art and design to communicate appealing stories through strong images and animation.

Method

I made a p5.js code and uploaded it to the repository so that it is available for the public. The code consist of two parts, one is where the interactables are and the other part is for the image and setting up the system. The original plan for the user to be able to upload their own images onto the website, however I wasn't able to do so due to the coding limitations.

Reflection

According to Kandinsky(2012), "points of the element “in itself” is veiled, thrust back; when abstract, it attains its full, unveiled sound".  I tried to imitate his quote by creating an artwork which was formed with a collage of circle points.

This piece was focusing on interactive play, where I am looking forward for the players to interact with the image.

I was also focusing on the art of coding(Dylan Beattie) where the player interacts with the artwork to create new artworks.
