APD Week 8 Play and Body
Contents
This week we are investigating play through ‘Body’. Inspired by Philip Worthington's Shadow Monsters (2015), I am interested in using shadow to construct interesting paintings and animation. In Philip’s (2015) work, he has created an interactive way to explore a different aesthetic form of creatures.
while researching for the project, I have discovered amazing series of photography from RUSS FORD and REYN SOFFE. They have been trying to present a new form of photography through a combination of abstract shadows and irregular human bodies. By pushing the human body to create shapes and other human forms, they can create a light-hearted ‘territory’ with brings joy and relief.
Their works have helped me developing ways of scaping my project dimensionally. I started to imagining artwork containing not only the human body, but also body parts of other animals and objects, Then I started to combine the virtual body, the shadow with real body parts of all objects.
Methods
I take photos of shadows around the neighbourhood. Then edit the photos in Procreate.

I have tried three different topics for this week, only filming shadows of other objects, filming the interactions of my shadow with real objects or objects’ shadows.
I have tried to engage myself through interacting with other shadows. There are many outcomes through the process. The most interesting part is to combine 2D and 3D imagery. Shadows are plain yet filled with unknown possibilities.
After the filming, I have tried to edit the footage using different aspects of rules I have given to myself on each photo:
draw body parts of different animals to add on top of a human body.
Shadows of dead objects are transformed into animals or monsters.
only draw human organs in the animation of a door’s shadow
Laterally, I was trying to break the traditional perceptions of the shadow or real objects through editing. The door’s image is then related to the human’s internal body, shadows of a chair can be a home for a monster or a climbing net for children. This is a great experience of playing with shadows while giving new interpretations through creative media. It was like giving new meaning to different shadows or objects.
