Theme:Play and Forces

Context

Theo Jansen - Strandbeest (Force: Wind), after I read the works in the ppt, I quickly understood the definition of forces. jansen used wood and various joint structures to shape an inanimate object. And he just placed the object on the windy beach, and it started to walk freely where the wind was blowing. So I learned this week's theme is: Let force guide your objects.

When I saw the wind and the sea in jansen's work, I thought of the windmill. And this work is very similar to Yung Yu Ho in magi (http://magistudio.net/work/apd-week5-play-and-forces-1), he created a windmill and turned the fan blades by the force of the wind while producing an animation. I wanted to create a simpler windmill based on his content, but a wooden chopstick and a few thin sheets of paper caused problems with my curved windmill. This is also the first time I've had a serious error in an APD assignment. I threw my chopsticks sadly and found it very much like a flag, and at this time a new inspiration appeared.

The power of a sailboat is made up of wind, but the sailboat needs to stay safe on the sea surface and needs a balance of gravity and buoyancy. So I wanted to express this week's theme through buoyancy.

Method

I handcrafted a post (bamboo skewer) fixed in the center of the plastic box, then made a hull out of foam and added a flag to the hull.

But the result was not as good as I expected, so I expressed the content of the sailing as an action of raising the flag.

Response

After getting the inspiration, I thought a lot about force, and wanted to express this week's theme brilliantly, I found that my ability was not enough to complete what I wanted to express. My foam boat didn't feel like a boat at all, more like a piece of junk due to lack of tools. I stuck a bamboo skewer in the center and wanted the plastic boat to rise with buoyancy as the water flowed into the box and sway from the unstable water. After I added water, I found that the boat floated very unnaturally and the flag moved very irregularly. My original intention was to create a lovely boat that rises due to buoyancy as the water accumulates. The stagnant water slowly drained away, and the boat slowly descended.

Reflection

Although I wasn't particularly satisfied with my work this week, the purpose of this exercise was to inspire me for some viewing interactive installations. These are great experiments, and I also learned from my experiments that I have my own shortcomings, and when I try to do these in the future, I need to have a more explicit design for my objects. The dynamic changes of objects also need to be predicted in advance. There is no doubt that this week's force brought me a different experience.
