Context

For this week’s theme of ‘Play and Place’, I went with the idea of playing around with the thoughts in my mind. I tried to show the two main things I am thinking about during this pandemic. One portrays the many negative thoughts that I am having and the other portrays how I wish I were in a peaceful place having the best time of my life. I tried to play around with the concept of thought and choose my mind as the place.

Method

I worked on the above illustration using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. First, I thought about how I wanted to portray the feeling of wanting to be somewhere else and negative thoughts. Once I figured that part out, I had to think about how to show both of them as if they were inside my head. For this, I went with the classic ‘bubble thought’. Once I had everything laid out, I made some sketches on paper, took them to Illustrator to create the outlines, and finished it off by putting in colors in Photoshop.

Response

As a response to this week’s theme, I created an illustration using Abode Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to show the things going on in my mind during this lockdown. I tried to show the two parts of my thoughts, one where I am sitting down and enjoying the peaceful environment and the other where my negative thoughts are taking over.

Reflection

All that I could think about when thinking about ‘Place’ was something physical or somewhere that I could be, or something that I could touch. I spent most of the week getting entangled in the physical meaning of ‘Place’ and trying to come with something playful in that aspect. All I could think about for that was making a 3D model or creating a live model of a fantasy location. After thinking about it for a while, I came across the idea of a ‘peaceful mind’ and how it is thought of as a place to be. This is when I started thinking about my mind as a ‘place’. After that everything fell into line, I made a quick sketch about how I wanted to portray my idea and started creating the illustrations.

For this week, I tried to continue playing with the tools in Illustrator and added Photoshop’s tools to my pipeline to help me layout the colors. I don’t do illustrations and paintings at all and I have very little knowledge about colors, lights, and shadows in a 2D setting. So, this was a fun little experiment. I got to play with the tools and brushes in Photoshop and Illustrator to create something that I was thinking about and I feel like you can see in the final product what I wanted to show.
