As technology continues to evolve, more and more students are spending more and more time on their electronic devices. It is also increasingly common for students to play on their own phones after class. This can lead to students being immersed in the online world without any real communication and becoming increasingly distant from each other. Also, not all students bring electronic devices to school. Some students may not be able to integrate with other students' social circles due to family factors or school rules. So I wanted to design simple board games that everyone could play together, so that more students could get out of the online world.
I start by collecting stationery items around me. Different stationery gives different identities. For example, a ruler can be used as a track, a tape can be used as a manipulative object, a ball can be used as a scoring item and so on. After this I combined and matched objects with each other to form different devices to push the tape to move. In the course of testing, I upgraded the game by stringing two tapes on a ruler at the same time and controlling the steering by the different distances between the two tapes. This simulated a car tyre drive system.
In designing the game, I set out a number of rules in order to make it accessible to the vast majority of student:
‘15 FUNNY GAMES TO PLAY ONLY WITH PEN AND PAPER’ <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNC3ukSqGAU>This video teaches us how simple game can be played using only paper and pen. The fewer props you use the more you increase the audience of players and the more you broaden the spread of the game.
Popularity can grow geometrically, and if board games can be made to form a trend, more people will step our of the virtual world in order to follow the trend and opt for face-to-face play instead. For example, in China in recent years, the popular Murder Mystery Game (a new type of board game, where 5-10 players read through a script and then integrate into the characters to solve the puzzle) have become more and more popular as a way to socialise, even though each game takes half a day to play
