APD Week 11 Play and Stillness

In response to the theme of Play and Stillness, Yuxin Liu and I collaborated on three fun videos.

Context
Our inspiration comes from the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once". In "Everything Everywhere All at Once" (2022), the mother and daughter have experienced countless crossings. After different lives, the two became two stones. The noise stopped, only the sound of the wind, and at that moment the two stones were communicating silently. I think this is the most interesting part of the whole film. The art style and performance form of the whole film are very gorgeous and complicated. Only this part is very quiet.
We thought this form was very much in line with the theme of Stillness, so we wanted to explore how objects would communicate if stationary objects were placed in a place where they would not appear in everyday life.

Method

Yuxin came to me and proposed the idea of ​​cooperation. We shared our original idea. Yuxin's idea was to draw static objects and interact with reality. My idea was to take screenshots from the video and give the objects in the video Dub. Then we merged these two ideas. Yuxin takes pictures of objects, and I take pictures of landscapes. Yuxin cut out the object and put it into the landscape photo. We played the object in it to simulate a situational dialogue. Finally, I added subtitles to the object.

Response

This is my first time collaborating with my classmates in this APD class, and I think combining the ideas of two people can create a more interesting work. We chose stationary objects, which do not move in our daily life, and put them in unfamiliar environments. For example, electric boxes will not appear on the beach, and traffic lights will not appear in the desert. It would be interesting if these objects could communicate with each other, but the communication of these objects must not have sound, which would destroy the quiet atmosphere of the whole video, we watched the objects have interesting but silent conversations while listening to the wind in the background, It will feel very quiet.

Reflection

At first we wanted to select six landscape pictures, each with only one object, but later we felt that there was no sense of silent communication. So we choose three landscape images, each with two objects, because there is a dialogue between the objects.
