Theme: Play and Observation

Method:

I thought to myself of how I feel internally before a good kick of coffee in the morning and decided to paint it out. Originally wanted to do a sort of 'where's Wally?' thing with coffee but then I ended up doing something a bit simpler - a painting.

Context:

Théodore Géricault 26th of september 1791 - 26th of January 1824

Theodore Gericault's Last Self Portrait

Response:

It's supposed to represent my state of mind before I can get a kick of caffeine into my system to get going as I tend to be quite dead otherwise.

Reflection:

When we were refered to self portrait, I could not help but think of a certain artist named Théodore Géricault, a french artist who painted a final self portrait before he died at a young age of 32. It's a haunting piece especially with the eyes which convey a bunch of emotions up to interpretation. I see defeat in his eyes, knowing that his death is soon to come and being unable to do anything to alter his future. This is achieved with his heavy use of the hellish red as the main light color and a black background to contrast it. This piece was a good way to practise lighting and the moods different lightings can convey.
