Play and Materiality
When walking around, you always leave a trail of some sort behind you. Sometimes it's dust, footprints, dirt or just a simple trace of your visit.
To respond to the theme of Play and Materiality, I wanted to go about representing the player's footsteps as they wandered around the place.
For instance, from the most recent God of War (Santa Montana, 2018), the player's footprints could appear on the snow very clearly, and when the player rolled, the snow would shape realistically. For the sake of this APD exercise, I will not be able to go that far, but I want to play with representing the steps.
The method of implementation feels a lot like painting on a canvas, except that it represents the player's journey. This type system can also be taken as a mechanic like in splatoon, where the player spread ink over the ground to "mark territory" and use it in their advantage.
In my case, I want to just a simple approach where I can make the floor where I walk on. The main objective is to have it playable over 60frames per second, and have it as a proof of concept mechanic.
I want to create a small game prototype where the player's footsteps could be visualied. See attached video.
