For this week's theme of Play and Abstraction, I decided to explore abstraction in character design. There are many examples of 2D abstract animations using simplistic shapes and lines, usually in tune with some music, such as this animator's work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d24xrC_XQgQ
The works of motion designer Wang Wei-Shen are an inspiration to me, especially his short film "Dreaming" which uses abstract character animation to depict the dream state. I also think the works of early abstract artist Oskar Fischinger, such as his Optical Poem, is a great example.
For this week I took simple fluid shapes and made a character animation out of it. I did this digitally using procreate on the iPad.
I made a 2D abstract animation loop of simple shapes fluidly morphing into a character's face.
This week my response was quite simple and I do feel like I could have pushed myself to create a more complex outcome. However i feel like there is a potential here for a series, or a bigger animated concept, and I will definitely be filing this away to take a look at it later.
