Theme: Play and Abstraction

Context:

I wanted my response this week to focus on abstraction as a verb, and how this could be an action which occurs while playing. I wanted to create a game which encapsulated this action, but still had some direction and form so the final product could have more significance. Hence, I focused on the idea that abstract imagery does not exclude representational imagery, but rather pulls from recognisable forms (Turner, 2003). This action is the way the players engage in a form of symbolic play.

This led me to creating this collaborative project, where my partner and I created an abstract collage of the city by playing a drawing game together. The abstraction happens as a result of the rules of the game, as the constraints naturally led the images we made to become abstract.

Method:

Person A shows an image to Person B, who then has 20 seconds to draw the image.

Person B then shows an image to Person A, and they draw an image in 20 seconds.

I wanted the end collage to have a theme, so I set the rule that all photos had to be taken around Sydney. We made 10 images each, and then I turned them into an animation with a collage at the end.

Reflection:

Overall, I find the response quite sweet. I appreciate that the collaboration in this process is what really brings the meaning to the final collage, as it is made by people sharing images and experiences. Plus, only those involved in the process know where all of the images come from. Thus, I think a larger scale collaboration would make this a more interesting project, and it could be done with different subjects or image constraints.
