Theme - PLACE

In response to the theme “place” I created an experimental video to explore and capture the experience of traveling on the train to the destination and back. Using the mirror effect, I wanted to picture two paths at once. The time spent on the way to work or school every day is the time when we focus on the views from the window and at the same time go deep into our thoughts. It is the combination of the web of our thoughts with flying views and places in the window. Places quickly replace each other and make us plunge into a kind of trance.

Method

Firstly, this idea came to my mind when I was going home by train. I captured the way between South Yarra and Caulfield stations with the camera on my phone. Then I reflected on the video and really liked the effect, it looked a bit trippy especially when people on the banner were cloning.

Then I made a drawing of the side view of the face and reflected it too, followed by the placement of it on the video with the road. Then, to emphasize the trance effect of the character and the influence of the surrounding space on it I added the effects of blurring, glitching and added a few different states of the character.

Then I added a dark ambient sound, which influenced a lot of the video, according to the track I made a few edits.

For the creation of this piece I used LumaFusion and ProCreate.

 Concept

As an inspiration, I used the article “Siting Animation: The effect of the place” by Birgitta Hosea. I feel like my response to the “place” theme is similar to the definition of “Sites for peeping”. This is an animation created for the space and encourages a purely private experience of furtive looking and forces a viewer to physically position her body and her gaze in a specific place to get a very specific view of the work. My goal was to immerse the viewer in the sensations of the routes.

Concept

As a related work, I used a video clip by Roisin Murphey “Ten miles high”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4xe-qiKE00

Following the aesthetics of a kaleidoscope, the artist presents her own vision of the city of London. Directed, styled, and starred by the very Róisín Murphy, the singer presents a surreal video through the reflection in the mirror effect and a colorful wardrobe, which transforms the decadent English spaces of empty parking lots, old railway lines and so on in the perfect stage for a song. Through the mirror effect grey urban views transform into gorgeously weird landscapes.

In my point of view, the clip represents the road to a new life after a damaging relationship.

Reflection

I realized that I’m very interested in the topic of routes overall. Not particular places but the way from one place to another is sometimes even more tempting than the destination. Moreover, metro stations and airports are like sacred portals between places and sensations. I would like to create something more worthwhile on this topic in the future.
