In response to the theme “Force” I created an animation with an abstract object that changes its form and spins in space according to the sound. This is my first attempt at fully subordinating animation to sound and at the first stage, it was quite difficult. But after a while, the analysis of each sound and transitions between the main blocks became easier and the process turned out to be fascinating. I found a way to transform an object during a long monotonous sound and short looped sounds. During the long sounds, my object extends in shape or rotates, during fast and repetitive sounds, it breaks into several objects or transforms very quickly and significantly.
Method
I started the creative process by searching for an appropriate track. I found a perfect electronic track on the “free sound” site and cut the part that was the most inspiring for me with a variety of contrast sounds in a short period of time.
After that, I exported the part of the track to Toon Boom. That was the first time I exported a sound to Toon Boom, it turned out to be easy. Then during the animating process, I focused on every particular sound to catch the mood, so I listened to the same part of the track over and over again. From time to time I listened to the continuation of the sound to understand how the object will look during the transformation and how I should prepare it for transformation.
Context
As a related work, I used incredibly inspiring abstract animation by Max Cooper “Solace in structure”. This is the perfect example of visualizing a unique electronic sound in a very playful way. Sound design and visual experience inseparable, exist a single organism.
Also, the sketchy way of drawing together with colorful lines and glitch effects bring a feeling of alive blueprints. I tried to copy this style in my animation. However, not to repeat the objects and movements, during the creation of my animation I didn’t watch the animation of Max Cooper, I focused on my own way of animating and my own sound.
Reflection
Being forced to create animation only according to the sound may lead to creation of unexpected shapes and movements. I thing the sound visualisation is especially crucial and beneficial in terms of abstract play.
