Week 12

Work In Progress Post

What I have been doing this week and why:

This week I did a Work in Progress presentation in the class. I did so because presenting my own work helps others see what I have been doing and this also gives me an insight of my own practice. When I present my work in front of others and when I prepare the presentation, I get to know my flaws and ways to overcome them. I also get a chance to receive feedback from my peers and mentors regarding the work I have done and I get a chance to improve my practice before submitting that.

After my work in progress presentation and after receiving feedback from my peers and mentors, I got a deeper insight of my work and understood where I need to step up my practice. I also got feedback regarding sounds. My peers and mentors suggested that I use environmental sounds instead of music altogether. So, I followed their advice and did the same and that led me to have really great output.

This week has been very experimental for me. I have been learning, playing and experimenting with Unity a lot. I have had a lot of approaches towards sound and interaction this week. This week, I have been working on the simulator, I have been adding sounds to my simulator game. I have been working with the sounds as per the environment. I have added sounds which give the user the feeling as if they are there in that environment. I have also added a start menu for the game which has options for the user regarding the game. I have also added some interactive elements to the game. I have added some spots to the game which function as speakers and as the player gets near them, he listens to new music and as the player moves farther away, the music fades. I have also added teleporting hotspots in the game. When the user passes through the teleporting hotspot, he gets to a new environment. These hotspots help the player change environments within the game and move backward or forward. All of the work has been documented below. In addition to all this, this week I have been working towards rendering of my work in various forms. I have been taking flat renders of my work, I also have rendered walkthrough of my environments. I am also moving towards rendering my simulator game and that makes folio 2 complete.

In addition to this, I have been researching about the related works of my field so that I can find inspiration to create my own work. Out of my research, I have thoroughly studied three works and put that up on the MAGI website as “Related Work Posts week 12”. This post can be found here:

Why I have been doing the above stated activities:

I have been adding environmental sounds and music to my game, along with interactive elements to make the gameplay interesting. When the gameplay becomes interactive, the player feels more interested to go forward and play the game and enjoy with the game. I have added teleporting objects to help the player move forward and backward and change the environments as and when they like.

Here is the impact of feedback and research that has happened over this week:

I have got great feedback from my peers and mentors regarding the walkthrough, layout and sound design. My peers and mentors suggested that I integrate environmental sounds in my game rather than actual music and that was a great tip which has helped me shape the work in the way it is now. I also got feedback regarding changing the layout a little bit in order to make the environments interesting and I have been doing that and it has given me great results.

What I am going to do over the next week:

Start: I am going to start working through the compilation of my work so that I can put it together well in advance before submitting it.

Stop: Next week, I am going to stop with the production as it is almost complete now.

Continue: Over the next week, I am going to continue still with research and getting feedback so that I can improve the slightest of mistakes and remove them before submitting them.

The work I did over this week has been documented in the PDF documents attached below:
