Week 9

Animated narratives

This week, we focussed on movement in animation. Movement can take place physically or psychologically.  Here, my concept deals with movement that takes place psychologically. This week, I created a concept about a girl facing problems and dealing with issues in her personal life and choosing to live with those issues for various reasons and at various stages in her life. But finally, in her life when those reasons start to fade away, her need to keep up with an abusive relationship ends. That is when she realises that she needs to leap out of it. Her movement out of the marriage she never wanted to be in is what I worked upon this week.

This concept is also about breaking free. This concept focuses on how the girl moves through time and space and then finally jumps out and lives her life happily after overcoming all her problems in life and deciding to be happy ever after. This concept deals with one relationship which makes her world a bad place to be. This week I have worked on a girl wanting to be ported into another world because she hates the world she is currently in! She eventually moves away and creates her own world when she realises that only she and nobody else can make her happy.

This week, I have also created a series of illustrations for my concept. I have used the concept of solid outlines to depict the characters and their situations and I have used black and white and coloured pen ink stain concept to illustrate happiness and sadness. I further combined these illustrations in a video to make the concept more evident.

I have used Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and handwritten mediums to express my feelings towards this weekly topic. I have used these mediums as it helps me make my intentions for this concept clear to the onlooker. I have also explored the medium of “movement” that we were provided with this week. My work uses the capabilities of these mediums to illustrate the concept as by using the above stated software tools, I can create illustrations and videos for my concept. The medium of movement helped me convey my concept to the audience as this concept uses movement in various forms from the start to the end.

I have also included the documentation of my work as I created this project along with this post in order to show how I have iteratively developed and worked on this project stage by stage.

I even had some references for the creation of this weekly work, both from the internet and from the useful watching and reading that we get as a weekly task. Some of these references were:

  1. This animation from YouTube that I came across while researching for this project

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbK7jSe1u6c

  1. A portion from our weekly reading, “Narrative Strategies” about acting and performance. I read the weekly reading and when I came across this portion, I took some cues from how I wanted this concept to turn out.
  2. The sound used in the video has been taken from a video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMvCfm_AjYo

For creating this project, I have indulged myself in various forms of research. I researched on the internet before creating this project. Research is one of the key elements before the start of any project. At the start of the project, I started out by creating another concept related to a person who was wanting to leave the world and get to another world because of depression and thus, I wanted to portray movement for this week’s theme. But the concept was a little weak. Research helped me develop the concept even further and constant feedback and suggestions by my peers and valuable guidance by my mentors has enabled me to create this project. Thus, research, feedback, reflection and practice are one of the key elements for the creation of a final project.
