ANIMATED NARRATIVES - WEEK 8 - TIME

Week 8

This work examines the idea of “time”. As we know, time is mutable and elastic, this work examines how time changes and evolves. This concept for week 8 is about realising and portraying the depth of love through time and animation. This concept explores time as a medium which changes lives and portrays time as the greatest power. This concept demonstrates how time holds the greatest power and can change lives for the better and how it can change them for the worse towards the end. As time moves forwards in this concept, life goes backwards. In this concept, I have explored how time can stop for two people, how time can speed up for two people (although they are together but time passes away very fast) and how time can go back years for two people towards the end (for the boy’s parents). This concept also depicts how time can evolve and change people physically and mentally. In this concept the boy is suffering already since long and everybody thinks that he loves a girl but in the whole plot, neither his friends, now his family get to see the girl and in the end they get to know that the girl was an illusion and obsession that the boy developed over time.

For this project, I have also created a series of illustrations where I have portrayed the boy and girl in silhouette and the environment changes according to their emotions. This series of illustrations depict their love story. Also, these illustrations only show the shadow of the boy everywhere, which helps me to depict the idea that the girl is imaginary and not real.

For the depiction of time in this week’s work, I have included a flow chart which I have created using an online diagram maker, a mind map which I have created by myself, a series of illustrations which I have created in Photoshop, a video which I have created in Adobe After Effects, and short treatments which I have created in Adobe Illustrator. All these mediums helped me portray time and depict my ideas clearly. I have used these mediums to convey time and I have used time for the depiction of my concept as in this concept, time plays a major role and portrays how powerful time can be.

For creating today’s work I have researched for references both online and also from the weekly watching and reading we were given this week. I have also taken my inspiration this week from the movie “Up” which was released in the year 2009. This movies also works in real time and in flashback and is a good example of how time has been used.

This week, I have found out that research is very important towards the creation of any project as it helps to bring clarity to the project. I have also learnt that practice, coupled with research is also very essential. Practice helps in improvement of any project. The illustrations I have created for this project are the result of both practice and research. I had also been working on another version of the project where the plot twists were different. I found out through research and feedback by my mentors and peers that I could evolve more and create something better with this idea. Thus, research, practice, feedback have been very important to this project.
