Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

This work examines the idea of Imaginary designer, a concept that was initially developed in Week 7 class under the world setting: 'What if people's imagination can occur in reality?'

The concept itself has a lot of potentials, and I reckon it is possible to develop it into both a linear animation and an interactive experience.

For animation – The concept can be made into an animation. The story could unpack from an imagination designer trying to look for work once graduated but faced many obstacles/social issues before she realized the depth of unfairness and problems caused by the ability and enhanced by human society.

Interactive – The concept can be made into a game, where the main character is able to generate object-based on imagination [Player would be their mind to imagine, not sure how gaming mechanic would work by transferring players ideas into the game, maybe drawing?] The advantage for interactive is that1 there would be more opportunity for the player to engage with objects/people and get to know the imaginary world.

The games 'Mirror Edge' and 'Dishonored 2' are the main references that inspired me when I was crafting the imaginary world. Both games have described Dystopia societies where drastic power imbalance exist in everyday life. Mirror Edge has described the story of an activist who takes actions towards a violent government, while Dishonored 2 focuses more on the battle between different classes in society. The stories of these two games have inspired me to change my story to challenge the concept of survival and critical choice in life.

Story

In a world where imagination can be turned into reality, a young graduate designer is looking for work. Freshly out of university, she understands the regulation for business but has lack a certain amount of experience. The corporations and organizations have turned her away countless times, leaving her in a tight financial situation.

Running out of options, the young designer begins to take orders online. Her expression relieves when a request comes in but changes to disappointed as she reads the shady description and the tight deadline she has been given to finish this job. The order says ‘Do not report this to the Department of Reality Generation’.

‘The payment would be well thought,’ she says, ‘and honestly, I don’t have much choice since the rent is due soon.’

Once the designer takes the order, a highly detailed description comes in. A long object that can push out small particles rapidly isn’t a difficult task for her as she finishes generating the object. She posts the object to the address she has been given and relaxed as money comes into her account.

Two days later, she sees the very object she has crafted on the news. Several murders occur in the downtown area, and the very tool that has been left behind in the last crime scene is the one designer has crafted. The concept of tools that can be fatal has been revealed to the public for the first time, before the news itself has been censored.

The designer is in total shock as she sees the news. She has no idea what the concept of a gun is, nobody does actually. But She knows that it is likely for authorities to take her power away, or worse: forcing her to give up her mind and thoughts, ending up in a zombie-like status in the rest of her life. As she is panicked about her life, there comes a slow knock on the door.
