For Folio 2, Vida and Robin will be working together on a short animation. This will be a 2D animation about drunkenness. We will create scenes and stories through our own experiences, the experiences of friends around us, and research on the Internet.
Field
We will express a person's psychological feelings when he/she drinks too much in the form of a handbook (like simple animation, or understood as dynamic comics).
The reason for choosing this format is firstly based on our ability.
Vida is good at making 3D animation, but she prefers to focus on plane content in the future. Therefore, through this project, she wants to improve her 2d animation ability and try new things. She also enjoys exploring camera angles and drawing storyboards, and the detail aspects of this project should work well. Vida also wishes to practice her drawing skills and 2d animation software skills during this project.
Robin is good at painting, but she didn’t make animations before. She wants to use this chance to have a try and improve her storyboard ability.
Based on these, we can give play to our strengths and preferences to cooperate the project together.
Second, this format of animation is a new form of expression interspersed between animation and pictures. We think this approach can give the work and the subject more possibilities to change. With the drawings and short actions/movements, it can be changed into an interactive game, a comic, 2d animation in detail, or just drawings.
Third, this is also a big challenge for both of us. Parts of the animation may need to be both drawn by hand and digitally, and all backgrounds and props will need to be drawn. After we draw all the storyboards, there may be too many scenes, characters, and props, which means we may not be done at the end of this semester.
Idea
People's lives are stressful and everyone hides their emotions. But when it reaches a certain load, people may vent in different ways. Drinking is one of the most common ways. Whenever got drunk, sadness and happiness are magnified and uncontrollably revealed. And this release is also the most authentic and lovable time for us to be human. Some people may do bad things after drinking, but that's also a part of who we are. We want to express the state of a person's life through what they do when they're drunk.
Chinese drinking tradition has been a lot of rules since ancient times. After we had a chat, the two northern girls had a lot of resonance about drinking. That's also what inspired us.
Divide the work
After we discussed what we wanted to improve through this project, we roughly divided the work. We will discuss the content of this theme and all scenes together, including the storyboards. We may choose the storyboards we are interested into finish independently, and finish the rest together. We brainstorm character designs and general scenarios together.
In the early stage, Robin would complete most of the painting of the characters and the background after co-designing the storyboards and characters. Vida will sort out the body angles and expressions needed by the character, as well as the processing of the connecting parts of the character after the animation. Then after part of the character is drawn, the animation will begin. After Robin finishes a painting, we will start to prepare the sound requirements and the choice of background music.
Reference work
This piece is from Skye Wei in China. Her work is great. Through composition, color, and other forms of expression, it perfectly shows the psychological process of insomnia and the body status of the next day after staying up late. The film is close to life and truly reflects what people do when they suffer from insomnia, as well as the helpless feelings brought by insomnia. The whole thing resonates with audiences. In addition, the painting of this work is also very detailed, and the use of light and shadow is very comfortable. The toilet scene and the clock scene are impressive. We also wanted to make something that would make people smile and something that resonates with the audience.
