Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

My focus this week was on recontextualising found diegetic and non-diegetic sound to blur the line between them.

By editing together small snippets of words from different retro sources, I changed their overall meaning and perspective from third person discussions and loose second person voiceovers from ads, making them address the viewer directly. Though sourced from videos, I feel that by creating a collage layered with handmade effects pushed it closer to animation.

I have been drawing inspiration from a burgeoning internet sub-genre, Analog horror (See Channel 7, LOCAL58TV, CH/SS, among others, via Youtube), where creators craft a second person experience from existing retro content mixed with faux footage, animation and audio. They tell a story across multiple short films pieced together as an overall fictional channel, the narrative revealing snippets of what is happening in this alternate reality.

The video posted here is only a small part of something that I want to expand upon with more custom-made animated content, like corporate marketing, ads, channel details, all of it giving a sense of a cohesive world that ties in with the games and animations I am and will be working on for this course. I feel coming across Analog Horror has better defined the style that I have already been working within, with all its retro graininess, suggestions of a larger, darker world, and the eclectic experimental content.

(But I am likely not doing this collage work again - I had to watch 10 hours of old television to find the right clips :’D )
