This week’s topic is about character. We were looking on some examples and found the point of view that the character gave us into the world. Then focus to the external manifestation of the internal state of character.
I was created a mind map for designing a priest character which will be used to interact with player character to provide information of game background. The difference of clothes between player character and this priest NPC will provide an early impression of their history and a noble higher status of priest NPC to the player. The dialogues between player and priest will be friendly but the priest character is hurting the player by sneaking ways. These actions are going to show a kind but fake internal state of priest character which against with his noble outside appearance. The arrogant attitude and impolite actions of NPC will show his despicable morality to player. By doing this practice, I was trying to learn how to express the external manifestation of the internal state of character through a strong contrast between character’s outlook and actions.
A similar design is the character “Patches” in video game Dark Souls 3 which always speak kindly and friendly with player but has many plots to hurt player character.
By learning more character examples in video game Persona 5 and video game The Last Of Us, I reflected that the external manifestation of the internal state of character does not need to always match with the actual internal state of this character. To reveal the actual internal state after advance plots of a story and finally show the actual internal state against with the external manifestation would be more dramatic.
