This week I thought I'd try creating a storyboard based on a game prototype I am building in Studio 1. I was interested in exploring visual storytelling and the feasibility of creating an engaging narrative arc with very few elements, leaning on composition and visual interest to build appeal.
I feel games are particularly well suited to visual storytelling as they allow players to create their own dynamic imagery in real time and provide opportunities for the players' own sensemaking to be reflected back to them. Games also afford players some directorial influence which can help align ideas and themes more closely with the players’ intuition.
I was inspired by ‘Stuck’ by Andrew Karalis (https://andrewkaralis.itch.io/stuck) which explores their experience living in an extended lockdown. Through dynamic imagery, the game is able to augment the tone of sections of play to serve as the foundation of its narrative structure.
