Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

In this week's class, we discussed the EMIS, the external manifestation of the internal state. We discussed how we design a character's internal world 'into' their appearance and actions.

In response to this theme, I make a character design for last week's story premise, “There is an angler who is competing with another angler”. Because there are two characters in this story, the first thing I did is to make the appearance differently. For creating an obvious difference, I made silhouettes for these two characters.

Swimming Pool (2010), which is an animation short film that impresses me. It depicts a character who has a horse low body and a character who has a fish low body meeting at the unmanned swimming pool at night. The ingenious part is that the animation has a small flip at the end of the story. Audiences finally understand why the character doesn’t want to go to the swimming pool until all the people leave and the author uses the character’s inner conflict to create a unique characteristic.

Through this class and some examples, I have understood how to create a unique character, but I still need to do more practice with a character design to familiarize the workflow.
