What if the world was in grayscale?
FOLIO DOCUMENTATION
This work examines the boundaries of good and bad using the idea of ‘what if the world was in grayscale’. In the animation world setting, everyone is in the same shade of grey. By creating an animated journey noting down the daily life of ‘Detective J’, who can identify the different shade of grey on the human body and therefore is able to separate criminals from civilians, I am able to show the heroism or villainy hidden under the society the detective walks past. Also, by using the medium of animation, I am able to cut down the budget to build real buildings that look super different from our lives e.g. the sphere hospital and all the other bizarre-shape apartments in my visual development sketches.
The storytelling aspect will be similar to ‘The Wind’ created by Robert Loebel, which shows the daily life of a man that in charge of creating the windy life of the society. Similar ideas are always examined in detective or crime TV shows as well, e.g. Criminal Minds and Hannibal.
By reading 'Creativity and Problem Solving' written by Linda Aronson, I reflected that the character setting of Detective J has to be both vertical thinking and lateral thinking so that he is unusual but exists. Thinking through this, I made him able to distinguish the difference between people, which is unusual in his society, but it's his own choice to uphold justice or to be dragged into the darkness.
