Animated Narratives Week 2 Mind Map

For this work, I wanted to examine medieval aesthetics and characters. I'm interested in seeing how these historical art styles would look animated, especially with digital capabilities. In my first brainstorm I came up with lots of ideas surrounding knight characters, and wanted to play with forest scenes. I think in this setting it would be fun to play with ideas which subvert the typical relationships of knight and monster, between knights, and play with the typical 1 dimensional 'hero' character in a comedic, slice-of-life way.

By using a mind map, I was able to tease these ideas out and refine my thoughts a bit more. It also helped with coming up with different sequences and vignettes to create. I also started thinking about references for this work, and I was thinking this would be in a similar vein to Albrecht Druer, the Limbourg Brother's works and the Unicorn Tapestries. After presenting these ideas to my group, I found that playing with dialogue and slice-of-life scenes for these knight characters was an interesting idea, so I brainstormed more with this focus. I also started to think about what relationships I wanted to depict for these characters, and how that could be new or subversive e.g. how the absence of a princess/damsel character plays into this, and what everyday, un-glamorous tasks does this knight have.
