Reflection

In Week 2 we explored how stories are shaped, starting from scratch by brainstorming with mind maps. We understood how rapid iterations and “asking the right questions” can be an integral part of developing a story in the initial stages.

I went with one of the premises that I came up with for this week, which was “A dog walks his human.” Initially I had a lot of ideas (as can be seen in the mind map) but after taking into account the feedback I received, I was able to narrow down on the storyline of a world in which dogs get prescribed “therapy humans” to deal with their issues, instead of vice-versa.

This work explores the following themes and attempts to answer the following questions:

  • The dynamics of having a “pet”
  • Who really needs to be “taken care of”- dogs or humans?
  • Are we really the superior species when deep down we are all just starved of affection?

My work takes inspiration from the illustrations of artist Barbara Daniels, who depicts a series of illustrations that show humans and animals in reversed roles. She takes very real situations and switches the place of the humans and animals to create thought provoking images that make us question the morality of animal treatment in the modern world. Through this process I gained a keen understanding of the evolution of an idea. It was both fun as well as enlightening to play with different possibilities, and the 5 questions that Kate had us reflect upon has actually helped me develop my studio project in a much more comprehensive manner.
