Week 12

Animated Narratives

What I have done this week:

This week, I have worked on the idea of feelings. I have worked with the idea of feelings that human feel in their day to day lives, such as happiness, sadness, anger, confusion, hatred and so on. I have worked on the concept thinking about how and what we feel daily and what would happen in a world where humans could walk past each other and exchange their feelings as the do so!

In response to this week’s theme, I worked iteratively with mind map, created bullet points, created a series of illustrations, and a video to work and explain my concept to the audience.

The video worked on the concept of bubbles. Bubbles portray the inner feelings of the characters and I used bubbles to depict how the characters feel on the inside. I used monochrome bubbles to depict negative feelings and multicolour bubbles to convey positive feelings. Eventually, as the people walk past each other, they are able to exchange their bubbles of positivity and negativity as it is a possible scenario in the world that I have created.

Why I have been working on this concept:

This week, we got the theme to explore the “what if” situations which could only exist in an imaginary world. As it is impossible to for such feeling exchange to happen in the real world, I created a concept and worked around it and created an imaginary world for the person looking at the work.

How this work uses the capabilities of the medium to express the concept and why this work is a concept for animation:

This work uses the mediums of mind map, Photoshop illustrations and a video created in after effects to convey the concept and make the concept clear to the onlooker as these are the tools and mediums which I can use to convey my feelings to the audience clearly which I won’t be able to depict otherwise. This concept uses the medium of “What if” to communicate my ideas as “what if” is a word which is imaginary and does not exist in real life. So, I used this word to communicate the impossible.

Following is where I drew my inspiration from for this week’s work:

1. My first inspiration for this week’s work was from this week’s reading, Games and Narrative: 2011. An analytical Framework by Jim bizzochi. In this work, I got my inspiration from the topic of emotion on page 5. Although, the writer talks here about emotions in game, I interpreted it as emotion in a linear piece of work. I read Hal Barwood’s comment here about “Tears of Boredom” in the context of a video game that can make a person cry, and I thought of working with emotions that are exchangeable. I thought of the video game as a constantly changing interactive and I related it to the human emotions which could change constantly.

2. I drew my second inspiration from the painting, Night market, which I came across while researching. This is a painting by Tithi Luadthong and shows many people in a market who are walking in a particular direction. I got inspired from this painting

I linked my above references that I had come across and then arrived at a final output for my concept this week.

Impact of loops of practice, research, feedback and reflection:

As with the previous weeks, this week too, I have been practising towards my work and researching regarding the works which are related to my own fields of practice for each week as mentioned above. I have been researching other works too. I have been researching about paintings this week and drawing feelings and emotions from paintings of various artists such as Night Market by Tithi Luadthong, Red Umbrella By Beverly Brown. I also received feedback from my peers this week to lay emphasis on research and I also received valuable feedback from my mentors regarding being specific about everything. I think this feedback has been really helpful and valuable and I have tried to apply these to this work and will be doing that to my future works too.
