What if we could travel on any plane?
Bullet Point Story
FOLIO DOCUMENTATION
This work examines the possibility of living on different planes. By showing people’s morning routines, I could embed the idea of ‘walking on any plane’ in the visuals. For example, the design of the bedroom will be totally different as they could live on six planes in a room instead of just one. The project will be conveyed through the medium of animation as the design of the environment is easier to be created in a 3D software and the idea of ‘lack of gravity but more of other forces’ could be explored more in-depth in animation.
The idea of showing people’s life as the main plot of the animation is similar to the short animated film, Noon (2015), which examines the idea of people’s afternoon routine. A similar idea of walking on different planes also exists in the music video ‘You’re All The World To Me’ (2013) in Glee, where the two characters dance on different planes while singing.
By reading ‘Film Directing Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen’ written by Steven Katz, I went back to my bullet point story and started visualising more possibilities for each shot. In the process, I came out with more shot ideas than when I just created the storyboard directly. A star symbol is marked on the additional storyboards. I added visuals like shots in the tram/underground instead of just showing the appearance of the transportation. I also added visuals in the coffee shop to showcase how the shop utilises the idea of being able to host more customers.
Also, after receiving feedback from Kate, I decided to rearrange some of the order of my storyboards. I moved the establishing shot of the cityscape to the beginning of the story, allowing the audience to know that this is a city with a different set of rules. Then, the audience will be able to enjoy the lifestyle of people under different gravity with more understanding. For the ending, I added a shot in which the character in the bedroom steps out of her room into the world with odd gravity to enhance the perception that it is a different world again.
