Week 1:
Working from the group premise “A fairy in a pot swearing at people”, I chose to push the absurdity of the idea by being overly literal, while attempting to avoid a predictable interpretation.
The lowpoly pixel-art style fits the cartoony concept and throws away believability while maintaining a visual tangibility; it might not be a realistic representation, but it still feels like a real object.
Inspired by Nickelodeon cartoons, Ren & Stimpy and the 3D styling of Psychonauts, I wanted to invest as much expressive character within this small scope by adding only a few specific details (i.e. the hairy arms and legs).
By focusing on styles that are distant from reality, such as the cartoony minimalism here, I want to find a middle ground that utilises the medium's strength of metaphor while maintaining a sense of a tactile reality.
