In Animated Narratives today we have been looking at use of Sound. We used the premise "Every step she takes forwards, an invisible crowd cheers, every step backwards, they boo"

Our intention with this story scene was to communicate what was occurring visually and sonically, without TELLING the audience what was happening.

In using a storyboard, we were able to visually present what is occurring and use notation and comic book style sound notations to visually and sonically convey the story as we intend to the audience. This is an extension of my practice into visual storytelling that I have been exploring in comic books, manga and animated series. The first two drafts of the storyboard that we workshopped as a group were really rough in that we just were trying to sketch the idea out quickly as possible before refining it.

  • A woman in chains walks down the path to her execution, accused of murdering her lover
  • She can hear the sound of people over loudspeakers baying for her blood
  • Amidst the cacophony, she can hear the voice of her deceased lover: 'I believe you, and I love you'
  • She stops in her tracks and sees their ghost smiling at her. The crowd goes silent, waiting for her to walk forward
  • She turns and looks back behind her, and the crowd begins to scream high pitched and furious
  • She smiles, then turns again and continues walking to her death. The crowd bays for her blood again
  • For her, the sound of their roars are muffled and distant as she walks calmly to her death
