Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

For this week's premise, the theme of my submission is “Static noises were heard before only darkness was left”. My ideal sound effects would be the white noises of the flickering of the store lights within an empty alleyway, where the camera would slowly pan into the darkness as the sound slowly dies down, leaving an eerie empty space with only silent echos to be heard.

This week, my work examines how sound would be able to stimulate human emotions. By using silence in the animation, I try to mimic and amplify the feeling of eeriness for the users. Filmic silence encompasses the essential parts and is scattered to endorse a certain feeling(Erik 2017). My idea was strongly influenced by the movie “Gravity (2013)”, especially the opening scene. The movie started with the panning of the earth in complete silence, where the viewer is fully immersed in the visuals of the earth. Slowly and subtly, some static dialog voices could be heard and the viewers finally found out that they are currently located within a spaceship. For me, this was a wonderful start for the viewers’ experience to be able to continue watching the whole movie.

I was also starting to brainstorm about my ideas for the story. I started by looking back into my past premise and through one of them which was with the topic. I feel like the original story was too cliche so I decided to reform the story but still kept the theme of it. I went with a story of a slime which would change the background colour but I wasn’t sure how the format of the story would be in. Linking back to this week's topic, for the sound of my story, the sound would mostly be a non-diegetic sound, where it would change according to the atmosphere of the surrounding.
