For week 10 of AN, we discussed the use of light in animation and interactivity as a narrative development device. Keeping this in mind I decided to focus on the premise of light revealing something, or having something change its form under the light.
After working on a mind map to brainstorm ideas, I settled on the idea of a flashlight that can show someone’s true nature when it’s focused on them. I created a demo version of an interactive game where the player has control over a flashlight that they could use, maybe in the context of criminal and investigative cases.
This concept would be much more suited to interactivity than animation because it’s the perfect setting for an interactive piece, especially one that involves investigating and interrogating.
I referred Yandere Simulator’s Title Screen where the foreground and background starts off with a normal schoolyard scene with a normal school girl. This all changes when eventual flashes reveal a bloody scene hiding behind the cheerful façade. Although Yandere Simulator is a 3D game, it uses flashes of light to show a contrasting scenery. I wanted to convey a similar contrast but with a light the player could explore around with instead of random bursts.
In terms of the reading material, upon reading Perception of Lighting and Shading for Animated Characters I started to think more about light as a way to portray emotion, and I added in a slight shadow to the top part of the 'evil' character's face to give her a more sinister appeal. Fire and Water was also a good reference for the interesting ways light was used to show contrast in both the elements and the situations they represented.
