Master Of Animation, Games & Interactivity

This week final developed Rationale/Context/Method/Outcome:

Rationale

It will be a 2d animation which use cinematography language to express the characters emotion and the landscape atmosphere.

The content:

My personal experience when I went to Mt Buller for skiing last year at this season.

Evoke the nature and human, beautifulness, using cinematography language in 2d animation.

Bring my personal experience into screening cinematographically. Suggesting that everyone’s life could become a story.

Emotions: Nervousness, scared, uncertain, loneliness, being left out.

Intended to show those emotions and the locational atmospheric spatial sense through my personal experience of the first-time skiing.

Cinematography language in storyboard:

  • First person point of view
  • Establishing shot
  • Emotional colour change
  • Close up shot
  • Slow motion
  • Offscreen shot
  • Zoom shot
  • Tracking shot

Context

2D frame by frame animation: Encounter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDfu4iEeyro

This animation was amazing me from camera movement to the character movement was all done by hand drawn…It shows about how 2d animation can look like 3d and how to make the whole piece dynamic and engaging. I learnt a lot from it and hope I can grab some ideas from the technique used in this piece.

In term of slow motion, I understand that slow motion could be great to perform with the time and add emotional effect to a scene. I want to add a slow motion shot into my animatic.

https://onanimation.com/2016/06/05/the-art-of-slow-motion/ This video explained a lot of the art of slow motion, that it can provide detailed and emotions with a quick action, that take audiences engaging with the sudden changed moment.

Composition in storytelling

Method

I am using Toonboom Harmony to animate, the main feature is the camera and key frames.

In this tutorial: https://www.toonboom.com/resources/video-tutorials/video/camera-motion, I learnt how to add camera peg and simulate the virtual camera. It helps for performance.

The fixed background will be drawn in photoshop while object that need to be animated will be drawn straightly in Toonboom.

As the sounds are also critical in the final performance, I will find sound effect from reality and record myself when my character need a voice.

Outcome

The outcome for these two weeks likely to be the final animatic with sound, with related camera movement and perhaps add sound. In considering time framing, line works are difficult to make them clear, but could add some conceptual colours to give emotional ideas.

For folio 1, the storyboard and assets should be prepared for later animatic development.
