I start looking at the design from Subnautica, which is a game I really enjoy (probably the best open-world survival game takes place in an ocean environment).
The character design is super cool and really shows the vibrant color of the ocean environment on an alien planet. Also, the use of size, color, and shape makes each sea creature unique. However, I noticed that the location of my story is on Earth, and these creature design can be too alien-like and look less realistic.
Common features of deep sea creatures include: big mouth, headlights and unique light patterns.
I decide to combine some of the features with marine plants , which made those creature look like the clickers from TLOU. This works as a way for the creature to disguise themselves and attract smaller animals. Another way of doing creature design is to duplicate their body parts such as making them having multiple legs or eyes.
Another game having good character design is Monster Hunter World. The monsters appearance often indicates their behavior. For example, if a monster looks like a combination of dragon and wolf, then it might fly and charge like a wolf. If the monster has a thick skin then your weapon probably won’t do much damage to it.
Underwater is a movie less well-known but still interesting to me. It uses the design from Cthulu Mythos to create scary and believable monsters underwater. The horror element works even more when the monsters are disguised in the dark and only revealed when necessary.
