10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki - Ponyo is Here is part 1 of a 4 part documentary series presented by NHK. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the working life of Miyazaki during the pre-production stages of the Studio Ghibli film ‘Ponyo’.
The episode explores the rituals and routines of the legendary filmmaker during the crucial concepting stages of a new film. It offers us an intimate look at how his daily life and practices play a role in his creative work, as well as his processes in bringing his projects to life.
Aside from giving some amazing insights into the working processes of a genius and legendary studio, this episode shows the creative struggles Miyazaki goes through in trying to bring a story to life. An important part of this episode is the process Miyazaki goes through exploring and experimenting with different mediums and techniques to try and capture the essence and emotion of Ponyo, before finally encapsulating it in a single illustration.
